HISTORY

Bakeneko

The Medicine Seller visits the Sakai household the day of the youngest daughter’s wedding to sell the sorts of things new brides need. The festivities are halted when the bride and guests are brutally killed. The culprit is the vengeful spirit of Tamaki, a girl the head of the household kidnapped in his youth and kept caged, subjecting her to all manner of abuses. Her spirit merged with that of a cat - her sole comfort during the ordeal - and set loose to get some good, old fashioned revenge. The demon is vanquished, the Sakai family is in ruins and neither the Medicine Seller nor the two survivors are particularly sorry for their lot.

The first Bakeneko arc in Ayakashi marked a shift in the Medicine Seller's personality. Though it is brief, he is far more relaxed and at ease than we ever see him again. His interactions are casual, sometimes even playful or friendly and there is a degree of cockiness to him when he's captured by the Sakai family and accused of Mao's murder. He isn't really taking the whole situation too seriously and it comes back to bite him big time.

Zashiki Warashi

On a cold, rainy, windy night, the Medicine Seller stops at an inn to sell his wares. A young, pregnant girl is pursued by an assassin who is subsequently killed and hung from the ceiling. Turns out the room the young lady was staying in was a mass grave for all the forced abortions the proprietor put her employees through back in the inn’s days as a brothel, and all those ghosts want to be born into the real world.

Umi Bozu

The Medicine Seller gets on a boat that winds up off course in Ayakashi territory. A monk must confront his guilt over incestuous feelings towards his sister who was sacrificed when they were both young.

Kayo, who had been relatively friendly with the Medicine Seller in Bakeneko, finds him to be a lot more suspicious in Umi Bozu, questioning his motives, who he's actually trying to protect, and calls outright his significantly chillier personality.

Noppera Bo

The Medicine Seller goes to jail for selling someone fake viagra and encounters Ochou who is set to hang for murdering her abusive husband and shitty inlaws. But not all is as it seems, including who Ochou actually killed and what the nature of that 'death' even was.

The Noppera-bo Arc gives a glimpse into the Medicine Seller's more romantic side. While we see him flirt with Kayo in the Bakeneko and Umi Bozu arcs, nothing ever really seems to come of it but this is not quite the case for Ocho.

Whether he acted on this affection before or after the arc's conclusion is up in the air, but it shows the Medicine Seller is capable of forming attachments to people and not all his relationships are shallow or fleeting.

Nue

The Medicine Seller heads to a mansion in Kyoto and plays parlour games with a bunch of ghosts who are stuck in an endless loop in vying for the hand of Lady Ruri and continuously reliving their gruesome deaths because a piece of wood wanted to feel special.

The Medicine Seller is visibly stunned by the three other suitors display of greed and disregard for the deaths of others, and while he'd been cold to them iitially, his usual mockery takes on a far more callous, contemptuous edge. These men are ghosts, it's true, and it's his job to cut their ties to this world and let them reenter the cycle of death and rebirth, but his approach becomes cruel. He poisons the incense, and reveals the murderers of the first suitor and Lady Ruri by having the perpetrators face gruesome demises, all the while finding the whole thing to be quite funny.

Bakeneko

Time takes a leap to the early Showa era and The Medicine Seller hops on a train with some very familiar faces. They wind up trapped in a car together, terrorized by the ghost of a news reporter who allegedly committed suicide. Each must come clean about their role, however indirect, in her death to escape this prison.

ABILITIES

Ofuda

He can create powerful talismans that are effective in warding off supernatural nasties. They have four stages depending on proximity of said nasty; blank, black writing, black writing with a closed eye motif, red writing with an open eye motif, and when the sword is unsheathed, the paper turns gold, giving them a little extra oomph. He can also create wards without the ofuda but this is shown to be very draining and even capable of outright hurting him when the bakeneko pushes back against the ward, causing deep lacerations to appear on his hand.

Sword of Exorcisms/The Other Self

The sword is a powerful tool in and of itself; when the Medicine Seller knows the Form, Truth, and Regret of a Mononoke, the sword is able to be unsheathed replacing the Medicine Seller with his other aspect known in fandom as the 'Other Self' or 'Hyper Form'. This form possesses the lion's share of his power, able to craft large and powerful barriers out of the ofuda, and exorcise Mononoke without breaking a sweat.

Note: since the sword will not be coming with him, the more chaotic aspect of his other self will be restored to the Medicine Seller, allowing him to draw on that power at will, but also having the effect of mentally destabilizing him and making him far more prone to acting out.

Telekinesis

The Medicine Seller can move things without touching them. Rule of thumb is that they seem to have to be possessions of his or he's attached ofuda to them beforehand.

Spiritual Sensitivity

He possesses some degree of spiritual sensitivity; he can generally pinpoint a location where a Mononoke resides, he can sometimes see or sense the presence of things others can't, and he occasionally receives premonitions in the form of brief visions of coming entities (such as in the Umi Bozu arc when he saw visions of the Umi Zatou gasping and twitching on the floor and the weird bird head monsters of the ghost ship winding through the boat). His spiritual sensitivity is not particularly fine-tuned or reliable on its own, which is why he uses the scales, ofuda and sword to make up for his own shortcomings.

Scales

These are not one of his innate powers but the scales are important tools to measure the distance of a Mononoke and he uses them to track their movements by the sound of their bells.

Hand Mirror

A small, ornate brass hand mirror he wears like a pendant. It can grow to many times its size to reflect magical attacks back. When used in conjunction with the smoke from his pipe, it can help form powerful illusions where the subject can project their inner nature outwards and confront their personal demons.

The Medicine Seller comes with a monster form pre-baked in. While there's no official confirmation about what the fuck his deal is, long-running fan theories posit that he is a zenko kitsune, and I specifically h/c him as a Kiko within the ranks of the zenko.

Fully transformed, he would be a bit smaller than average size for a typical Ezo fox, his fur the same ashen colour as his hair, with the distinctive red markings still present on his face, and with nine bushy tails.

Illusion | Illusions can range from fairly harmless, such as trails of lights or balls of flame or making a stack of leaves and rocks look like priceless treasure, to psychological deep-dives digging into a person's most intimate memories. There will always be an air of artifice about the latter, like being trapped in a play or a painting.

Kitsune, in folklore, are tricksters and seducers at their worst. Even the highest ranked zenko are not able to escape their mischievous nature. In his bestial form, the Medicine Seller may grow territorial over a place or a person, and use illusions to trick interlopers away or seduce them into doing something he wants. The more he fails to feed his urges, the more dangerous the illusions will become - starting as largely benevolent and just turning people around and away, but as his aggression progresses, he would use trickery to lead them into dangerous situations, or even driving them to madness (akin to kitsunetsuki, albeit without the element of possession)

Skills:

The Medicine Seller possesses excellent hearing, able to precisely track the sound of the scales over a decent distance. He also has a strong sense of smell. In the Nue arc, he is shown to be a formidable crafter of incense.

Physically he is fairly fit and athletic; but he's otherwise unremarkable in that department.

As a medicine seller he's well versed in herbalism and traditional kampo, along with some more modern medicinal methods (up to about the late 1920s to early 1930s) but it is a mishmash of various cherry-picked traditions of 'whatever works'. Some of it is magical in nature (such as the mystical flash grenade gunpowder mixture from Umi Bozu), some of it is mundane and some of it is probably a scam. Look, he's gotta eat, and whatever pays the bills, right?

FIRST EVENT: - The first Bakeneko arc in Ayakashi marked a shift in the Medicine Seller's personality. Though it is brief, he is far more relaxed and at ease than we ever see him again. His interactions are casual, sometimes even playful or friendly and there is a degree of cockiness to him when he's captured by the Sakai family and accused of Mao's murder. He isn't really taking the whole situation too seriously.

I don't think anything could have prepared him for the extent of the horrors the Sakai family committed and witnessing what they had done to Tamaki, along with the strong implication that this had been done to many other women before and after her. The whole situation left the Medicine Seller feeling rather hollow afterwards.

When we meet him again in the first episodes of Mononoke, he is much more reserved and throughout the series, he is more inclined be brusque and callous, even with people he cares about, such as with Kayo when she is worried about what fears the Umi Zatou will show her and he only responds with 'If the problem lies within yourself, no one else can help', or when Ochou's past is laid bare and she chastises the Medicine Seller for finding something amusing about it.

Kayo, who had been relatively friendly with him in Bakeneko, finds him to be a lot more suspicious in Umi Bozu, questioning his motives, who he's actually trying to protect, and calls outright his significantly chillier personality.

SECOND EVENT: - The Noppera-bo Arc gives a glimpse into the Medicine Seller's more romantic side. While we see him flirt with Kayo in the Bakeneko and Umi Bozu arcs, nothing ever really seems to come of it but this is not quite the case for Ocho.

There are some light implications that this is a person the Medicine Seller is familiar with (even if the Mononoke!Ocho is baffled by his remark about her acting completely out of character) and has a deeper relationship with than the usual people he encounters. The more ambiguous nature of the arc makes it difficult to pinpoint what that is, but it's evident between the antics of his Other Self under the guise of the masked man, and his parting words with her at the end, and his content smile when she is finally able to leave her abusive situation all point to an abiding affection for her and concern for her well-being.

Whether he acted on this affection before or after the arc's conclusion is up in the air, but it shows the Medicine Seller is capable of forming attachments to people and not all his relationships are shallow or fleeting.

THIRD EVENT: - The Nue Arc shows off the Medicine Seller's more callous side. The arc is, in and of itself, a pitch black comedy about four suitors (one of which is killed off early on and replaced by the Medicine Seller) ineptly trying to win the hand of Lady Ruri through contests of incense with underlying aspirations of getting their hands on a precious treasure.

The Medicine Seller knows that these men are already dead and have been dead for god knows only how long, with their ghosts repeating their follies over and over and over again. The Medicine Seller delights in disrupting the social mores that they seem locked into. He's an unsettling figure at the best of times, but he's really playing it up; showing off his sword from the start, bowing condescendingly when he greets the suitors, but remaining standing in the presence of Lady Ruri.

But this isn't really anything out of the ordinary for him, even if he's leaning harder into the bit than usual. The tipping point comes when the corpses of the missing first suitor and Lady Ruri's are revealed to have been horrifically murdered. Once the three suitors get over their fear of a murderer in their midst, they rush past the Medicine Seller and the corpse of the woman whose hand they were vying for only moments before, and start tearing the room apart in search of the real reason they're there; an artifact known as the Rannatai (or nick-named the Todaiji).

The Medicine Seller is someone who would fit well in the setting and conflict with it in interesting ways. He is blazé about sex, and as something that is already bestial in nature, violence in the context of hunting for food, or killing in defense of oneself don't phase him.

The concept of the zadza needing to be fed is not entirely out of line to him. He'd be able to adapt quite quickly to the culture, and make himself very useful. After all, in a world that runs on sex and violence, there's always need for medicine and aphrodisiacs; his bread and butter so to speak.

There are also interesting ways in which the attitudes of the locals would conflict with his own philosophy. He holds crimes of passion in utter contempt; to him it is the ultimate failing of one's own self-control which results in usurping the agency of another. And being so permissive of the cyclical nature of violence is the perfect storm for the formation of beings like mononoke.

Furthermore for someone who has such iron-clad control of himself, he is now put in a position where he could lose it and the consequences could be lethal to others. He would be actively attempting to repress a part of himself that would deny the zadza which could make for interesting conflict.

Description: A farmhouse tacked onto an older structure that had once belonged to a successful, albeit reclusive, apothecary before for the former resident fell prey to the creatures that lurk in the surrounding forest. The house itself is flanked by Trenchwood, and the rest of the land is an overgrown orchard of cherry, chestnut and persimmon trees. Reaching it is a dangerous trek, the pathway up to it largely overgrown with weeds and brambles - to say nothing of the 'neighbors' that dwell in the surrounding trees. A stone fox statue covered in moss stands guard just outside the gate leading up the path.
Interior:

Old Structure

The old building is quite small, with only three rooms. It's built from wood and a ceramic tiled roof and is the main area of business. It is a good hundred and fifty years older than the residential structure tacked on to it, but besides that is largely unchanged. It is sturdy and has weathered years of neglect far better than the new structure.
Pharmacy: The main area. Contains many boxes of typical medicinal herbs on display. There is a specific section for hunters with various types of incense. Behind an old hard-wood counter, there are shelves of tonics and two doors, one leading to storage and the other to an examination room.
There is a discrete sign is propped up on the counter, advertising the other services the Medicine Seller can provide. It reads thus:

Storage: What it says on the tin. Or tins, rather. The storage room is where the Medicine Seller stows excess goods and non-perishables.

Examination Room: Rarely used - but fairly typical. There's an examination table, a scale, and rudimentary medical equipment.

New Structure

A larger, residential structure added on to the old building about a century and a half later. Despite its relatively recent construction, it is far more dilapidated than the old structure, not having survived well in its neglect. The outer walls are covered in mildew, and the doors and windows are in poor shape. The interior is dusty, and the wood floors creak precariously but remain relatively sound otherwise.
[F1] Garden: Connecting the old structure to the new is a wooden walkway passing a semi-interior garden.

[F1] Kitchen/Dining area: Probably the biggest room in the entire building. There is a fire pit in the middle of the floor as well as an old cast-iron oven. There are shelves with cookware and mismatched stoneware, and a heavy stone basin and indoor water pump. Fairly fancy and modern, all things considered. There is a small pantry as well as other storage.

[F1] Tatami room: An unused room. Contains a dusty sewing machine and a few empty boxes. Very exciting.

[F1] Bath: A tiled bathroom with a bath with a sliding door leading outside to dispose of used bathwater rather than bottling it and selling it over the Omni like any sane person.

[F2] Bedroom: Small and a bit cluttered with books, the Medicine Seller has done away with the rotting bedframe and mattress, and made a sort of nest of cushions and thick, downy blankets on the floor.

[F2] Work room: Walls are lined with shelves containing a growing collection of books on medicine and various kinds of local erotica (old habits die hard). Herbs hang in bunches drying out, and there's a small workspace with a floor table and cushion where the Medicine Seller crafts his various potions and poultices.

[F3] Loft: Less a room and more of a glorified crawlspace. Basically just more storage, but remains empty for now.

Basement: An old stone cellar with an earthen floor. Contains some aging casks and a not so insignificant population of spiders.

Character Background

• History:

There is very little we know about the Medicine Seller; where he comes from, what he is, how long he's been at this gig, or even his name.

There are some visual cues that give vague answers in that regard; his appearance with his bloodless pallor, sharp fangs and pointy ears suggests that if he ever was human, he isn't any longer. His clothing is composed of both women's and men's attire, positing himself as an ally to those most often abused in feudal society (as misogyny comes up frequently as a theme within the series). He possesses analogues to the three sacred treasures of Japan as well as other signifiers such as his red facial markings and his Other Self's blackened teeth that suggest a more noble (potentially divine) role than his very lowly merchant status.

While we never get his explicit motivation for pursuing the Mononoke as he does, we do get a little insight about it in the Umi Bozu arc when Genyosai explains the meaning of the word Mononoke; it can effectively be written as 'disease of the spirit'. And, well, his profession is a medicine seller and his methodology for dealing with the Mononoke is, effectively, a sort of spiritual therapy.

Unfortunately, all there is to him are hints that don't point to anything specific. For RP reasons, this is obviously frustrating and while I prefer to maintain the ambiguity of such, there may be instances where it will have to come up. So I'll roll with the most popular theories that the Medicine Seller is a fox spirit on the more benevolent end of the spectrum and has, for whatever reason, opted to deal with the Mononoke as they come.

Summary of the Bakeneko arc Note: Ayakashi is an anthology series where the Medicine Seller debuted. It remains canon to Mononoke as it is referenced in the Umi Bozu arc by Kayo.

Mononoke Summary

• Core Relationships:

The Medicine Seller is a loner by nature, never really staying in one place for any significant amount of time, so he doesn't exactly have what one would call a booming social life. His itinerant lifestyle and aloof nature tends to mean the majority of his interactions are superficial. On top of that, his detached and chilly politeness makes him a rather unsettling individual to be around. He can be callous, low-key mocking and contemptuous, especially to those who abuse their power throughout the series.

His role as a more passive observer to the Mononoke's stories, coupled with his consistent proximity to death and tragedy has left him rather cavalier about these matters. Even when interacting with Kayo again, he comes off as more withdrawn than their initial meeting, even seeming to try to distance himself from her. He eschews any potential of forming lasting and meaningful bonds with people, disappearing from lives as abruptly as he appeared.

He isn't all passive-aggressive politeness, however; he does show some of his friendlier and more playful side to Kayo and Odajima in the first Bakeneko arc, joking around with them as they went to get salt from the kitchen. While he was mocking of Odajima, it was mostly playful, and seemed more to boost Kayo's morale (who was, at the time, quite terrified by the whole giant cat monster situation). During the Umi Bozu arc, he seemed happy enough to answer Kayo's questions (albeit in a roundabout and esoteric manner) and he showed concern for and helped her recover from the hallucination of her worst fear.

He also shows a degree of affection for Ochou, and while the Noppera Bo arc has little moments that hint at a deeper relationship between them, the ambiguous nature of that whole arc makes it difficult to pinpoint what that might have been. All that can be said for certain is that he sympathized with her plight and cared about her on a more personal level than most Mononoke that he's encountered.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Compassionate/Emotionally intelligent - As cold as he may be outwardly, he doesn't entirely have a cold and cynical shriveled raisin where his heart should be. He has a deep, abiding compassion for many of the Mononoke as most are victims of terrible circumstance and much of their behaviour is understandable, if not outright justified. He seems to view his work in exorcising them as a grim duty rather than some glory-fueled hunt, and even his methodology of uncovering their Form, Truth, and Regret entails having some measure of empathy towards their situations. There are several points where he seems genuinely happy and relieved when a tormented soul's truths are brought to light and they are able to finally move on.

Level-headed/Rational - The Medicine Seller is a very difficult person to shock. When one encounters the aftermath of human brutality in the form of Mononoke, it's only natural to develop a pretty thick skin. His mental and emotional resilience makes him very reliable in crisis situations; he can think quickly and rationally under pressure and it's very difficult to get him genuinely angry or scared enough act rashly. We see this kind of calm cool-headedness in most situations, but especially in Umi Bozu when he is unhurriedly crafting the magical flash bomb and in Nue when all the hellish existence of all the ghosts are dragged into sharp relief.

Away from the pressures his work normally brings, he tends to have a very go-with-the-flow disposition. He easily accepts that there are things beyond his control or understanding, and takes that in stride gracefully. It's rare for him to offer up personal information or opinions (about the only time we get him vocalizing his opinions is expressing his contempt for Yoshiyuki's actions and when he says that 'no one has the right to control another') but he does get relatively chatty when it comes to medicine or Mononoke. He delights in showing off his more fun and recreational 'medicines' to Kayo, and throughout the series, when questions about the nature of Mononoke are posited in good faith, he has no issue with answering honestly (albeit esoterically), and he shows patience and diligence in doing so.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Aloof/Detached - The Medicine Seller has always been rather reserved - he is not in a profession where it's wise to wear his heart on his sleeve, after all. But the first Bakeneko arc did mark a shift in his personality - early on, we see him interact casually, even playfully at times and there is a degree of cockiness to him when he's captured by the Sakai family and accused of Mao's murder. He isn't really taking the whole situation too seriously.

There's a common theory that as of the first Bakeneko arc, he's inexperience, but I lean more into thinking nothing could have prepared him for the extent of the Sakai family's crimes and witnessing what they had done to Tamaki, along with the strong implication that this had been done to many other women before and after her. The whole situation left the Medicine Seller feeling rather hollow afterwards.

It was certainly a turning point in his own story. When we meet him again in the first episodes of Mononoke, he is much more reserved and throughout the series, he is more inclined to make more brusque and callous remarks, even with people he cares about like Kayo (such as when she is worried about what fears the Umi Zatou will show her and he only responds with 'If the problem lies within yourself, no one else can help') or when Ochou's past is laid bare and she chastises the Medicine Seller for finding something amusing about it. Kayo, who had been relatively friendly with him in Bakeneko, finds him to be a lot more suspicious in Umi Bozu, questioning his motives, who he's actually trying to protect, and calls outright his significantly chillier personality.

He has accepted that, in most social situations, he's an outsider. With his longevity and proximity to danger it's difficult for him to form any kind of relationship deeper than the superficial without it ending in some kind of tragedy. While he has accepted that such things are an inevitable part of life in general, it doesn't mean he will readily admit them into his personal life any more than his duty already demands of him. He's already dealing with the aftermath of other people's personal tragedies, he doesn't need any of his own.

Arrogant - This is less of an issue post-Bakeneko, but it still sometimes pops up. What happened with the Sakai family certainly humbled him a bit and his later stories depict him as much less my-way-or-the-cat-monster's-way and also less blatantly mocking. That being said, we still get glimpses of his arrogance, such as his boast in Umi Bozu about the Ayakashi ('Let them come, for it is my invitation they fear the most'), as well as his low-key rivalry with Genyosai. He also takes some pleasure in letting Kayo suspect him of being the one who caused the ship to veer off course.

But it's the Nue arc where his cockiness really manages to rear its head again though. Once he realized that there was no one there left alive, we see the trickster side of him return. He behaves improperly; not bowing to Lady Ruri and standing on the furniture (no, I have no idea what it is with him and standing on tables, he does it in the Zashiki Warashi arc too, I can only conclude that he has a serious case of Short-Person Syndrome). He delights in making fools of the ghost suitors, and the means in which he tricks them into realizing they're already dead are quite cruel and callous (even if they were, to the one, terrible people). He even speaks contemptuously to the Nue, when he is usually quite sympathetic to the Mononoke, and is, over all, just a horrid little beast who causes a ruckus.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers:

Ofuda: He can create powerful talismans that are highly effective in warding off supernatural nasties. They have four stages depending on proximity of said nasty; blank, black writing, black writing with a closed eye motif, red writing with an open eye motif, and when the sword is unsheathed, the paper turns gold, giving them a little extra oomph. He can also create wards without the ofuda such as in the first Bakeneko arc when he's trying to hold it off as they escape into the cellar. This is shown to be very draining and even capable of outright hurting him when the bakeneko pushes back against the ward, causing deep lacerations to appear on his hand.

Sword of Exorcisms/The Other Self: The sword is a powerful tool in and of itself; when the Medicine Seller knows the Form, Truth, and Regret of a Mononoke, the sword is able to be unsheathed replacing the Medicine Seller with his other aspect known in fandom as the 'Other Self' or 'Hyper Form'. This form possesses the lion's share of his power, able to craft large and powerful barriers out of the ofuda, and effectively exorcise Mononoke.

Scales: While not necessarily one of his innate powers, the scales are important tools to measure the distance of a Mononoke and he uses them to track their movements by the sound of their bells, and, in the Zashiki Warashi arc, he planted one on Shino so he could follow her into a sort of pocket reality the Mononoke had created. They seem to possess some degree of sentience, bowing and flocking to people that they like, and are generally amicable little beings.

Hand Mirror: A small, ornate brass hand mirror he wears like a pendant. It can grow to many times its size to reflect magical attacks back. When used in conjunction with the smoke from his pipe and the use of shamanistic Noh theater, it can help form powerful illusions where the subject can project their inner nature outwards and confront their personal demons.

Telekinesis: The Medicine Seller can move things without touching them. Rule of thumb is that they seem to have to be possessions of his (such as the medicine box, his scales, or the sword) or he's attached ofuda to them beforehand (such as opening doors, or prying open the utsurobune)

Spiritual Sensitivity: He possesses some degree of spiritual sensitivity; he can generally pinpoint a location where a Mononoke resides, he can sometimes see or sense the presence of things others can't, and he occasionally receives premonitions in the form of brief visions of coming entities (such as in the Umi Bozu arc when he saw visions of the Umi Zatou gasping and twitching on the floor and the weird bird head monsters of the ghost ship winding through the boat). His spiritual sensitivity is not particularly fine-tuned or reliable on its own, which is why he uses the scales, ofuda and sword to make up for his own shortcomings.

Longevity: The Medicine Seller is, to some degree, immortal. While he can be hurt physically, he doesn't age past his present state and has been around for at least a few centuries.

Mundane: Outside of his tools and magical capabilities, the Medicine Seller possesses excellent hearing, able to precisely track the sound of the scales over a decent distance. He also has a strong sense of smell. In the Nue arc, he is shown to be a formidable crafter of incense.

Physically he is fairly fit and athletic; he's quick on his feet and sturdier than he initially looks, but he's otherwise unremarkable in that department.

As a medicine seller he's well versed in herbalism and traditional kampo, along with some more modern medicinal methods (up to about the early 1930s). Like his magic, it's a mishmash of various cherry-picked traditions of 'whatever works'. Some of it is magical in nature (such as the mystical flash grenade gunpowder mixture he uses in Umi Bozu), some of it is mundane (like the various medicines he sells to the proprietress of the inn in Zashiki Warashi) and some of it is probably a scam (like the aphrodisiacs he shows to Kayo in Bakeneko). Look, he's gotta eat, and whatever pays the bills, right?

• Blood Type: Pale blood

• Patron Pthumerian: Argonaut - the Medicine Seller doesn't feel particularly strongly about deities one way or another. But Argonaut would engender some fondness from him.
• Blood Power Manifestation: Complementary. He would not gain any new abilities on arrival, but his canon abilities would be amplified such as being able to use telekinesis on things that are not his possessions or have the ofuda stuck to them, his wards without ofuda would be more stable and less draining, and his spiritual sensitivity becoming more consistently reliable, with the Paleblood enabling more frequent premonitions and letting him have a stronger sense of the unseen without having to rely so much on his scales and ofuda.

The enigmatic Medicine Seller is not a particularly nice person. He’s certainly polite and observes all the niceties befitting his social superiors (which is literally everyone, yay feudalism), but there is little warmth in his interactions and he can come across as insincere or even outright mocking at times. His outward personality is soft spoken, cold, and quite formal. He keeps his composure, even in the midsts of pure chaos.

 

Motivations
 |
He is singularly focused on his duty to sever the Mononoke from this world and while he makes an effort to protect those on the receiving end of their wrath (often by giving them ample opportunity to come clean with the information he needs), he’s stated that he has no obligation to save the people involved. Indeed, he rarely shows remorse when people die, but on the other hand they’ve been, almost without exception, irredeemable assholes. And hey, it’s not like he didn’t try.

He’s not completely devoid of compassion, however - he is shown to sympathize with regards to the suffering that made the Mononoke what they are. It is important to note that for the sword to be drawn, it requires that the Medicine Seller first empathize with the Mononoke on at least some level by understanding their motives. Tamaki and Ochou's plights struck a particular chord with him.

He does have a moral compass, even if the needle may point a bit on the grey side. He believes in a person’s right to make their own choices, tempered with a measure of personal responsibility and that no one has the right to control another. He shows affection towards people who are assertive and compassionate and abhors abusers and people who force their will on others - his distaste for some of the other murderers in the series makes that much evident.

Stoic and strange as he may be, the Medicine Seller isn't completely anti-social; he's usually happy to answer questions that are asked in good faith - even if those answers are enigmatic, esoteric and laden with multiple meanings.

He will also rarely outright lie. He's certainly not above deception and trickery if it inevitably leads to truth, but he tends towards more evasive manuevers and misdirection like being particular about semantics, lying by omission or relying on others making presumptions than telling fibs.

Handling Conflict

Most times, the Medicine Seller prefers to act as a detached observer, taking in the dynamics at play, and remaining as unobtrusive as possible, interjecting with only the occasional question. Once the shit hits the fan however, all bets are off. The thin veneer of observing the strict social hierarchy vanishes, and while he's still technically polite and formal, the Medicine Seller is much more brusque and assertive.

Six Traits

Reserved: One cannot do the Medicine Seller's job with their heart firmly on their sleeve; that's just asking for trouble. 
Patient Even in a crisis, the Medicine Seller retains an air of calm rationality. He is methodical and careful wherever possible.
Cunning: The Medicine Seller is not above employing trickery to suss out the Form, Truth, and Regret of a Mononoke. He also displays a more playful and teasing side with those he takes a liking to, and making fools of those he very pointedly doesn't.
Cold: He doesn't visibly or audibly emote much, and tends to speak in a formal, clinical manner that can be deeply off-putting.
Confident: He knows both his strengths and his limitations, but he isn't above the occasional boast ("Let them come, for it is my invitation they should fear the most," sure is a line.).
Open Minded: A necessity when one needs to find 'Truths' behind the monsters he combats. Rarely are things a simple case of black and white.

Ghostly and unreal as he may initially appear, the Medicine Seller is flesh and blood. He dresses in wildly ostentatious attire, mixing both masculine and feminine elements. He carries a traditional medicine box that, given the absolute legion of scales that live in one drawer alone, is probably quite a bit bigger on the inside. Throughout his clothes and accessories, there is a running motif of eyes.

For anyone with a pair of functioning eyes, he is very obviously not human, sporting a pair of pointed ears and sharp incisors. He doesn't visibly emote often, giving him a somewhat flat and uncanny affect. His hair is long and held in check under a purple bandana with a number of ornate hairpins.

His build is shorter than average, and quite a bit sturdier than one may initially think. Carrying that medicine pack around certainly gives him some considerable core strength. Like his speech, his movements are usually slow and deliberate, right up until things get real. Then he proves to be quite quick and nimble.

Description

The Other Self/Hyper Form/Shingi is basically a pallet swap of the Medicine Seller. In this form, he has dark skin, silver hair, blackened teeth, and gold circular markings with centers that move like eyes. His clothing is even more vibrant in shades of red, gold and purple.

There's very little we know about the Other Self, though the recent movies have shed light on the Shingi. They are powerful spirits kept within the sword of exorcisms (taima no ken), and the Medicine Seller is the wielder of the Li/Ri sword (Ri no tsurugi). The shingi is kept under tight reign, often wrapped in ofuda and can only be released under specific circumstances so that power cannot be misdirected or misused.

In the Noppera Bo arc, it is heavily hinted that the man behind the mask is the Medicine Seller's other half (as the Mononoke is Ochou herself). I generally headcanon that he used his other form as a blank canvas for Ochou to project her desires on to so that she could confront her past trauma within the confines of an illusion he wove for her.

First Impressions
 |
Pretty, but in a deeply uncanny way. Ageless, looking somewhere between early 20s to early 30s. Presents an air of knowing more than he lets on. For those with the ability to read minds/auras/whatever, he won't radiate any kind of malignancy or evil intent. He's soft-spoken, but can still be deeply offputting with his halting manner of speech, delivered in a detached and measured near monotone.

And no matter how friendly he is being, his laugh has an unfortunate sinister quality to it.

history

Bakeneko

The Medicine Seller visits the Sakai household the day of the youngest daughter’s wedding to sell the sorts of things new brides need. The festivities are halted when the bride and guests are brutally killed. The culprit is the vengeful spirit of Tamaki, a girl the head of the household kidnapped in his youth and kept caged, subjecting her to all manner of abuses. Her spirit merged with that of a cat - her sole comfort during the ordeal - and set loose to get some good, old fashioned revenge. The demon is vanquished, the Sakai family is in ruins and neither the Medicine Seller nor the two survivors are particularly sorry for their lot.

Zashiki Warashi

On a cold, rainy, windy night, the Medicine Seller stops at an inn to sell his wares. A young, pregnant girl is pursued by an assassin who is subsequently killed and hung from the ceiling. Turns out the room the young lady was staying in was a mass grave for all the forced abortions the proprietor put her employees through back in the inn’s days as a brothel, and all those ghosts want to be born into the real world.

Umi Bozu

The Medicine Seller gets on a boat that winds up off course in Ayakashi territory. A monk must confront his guilt over incestuous feelings towards his sister who was sacrificed when they were both young.

Noppera Bo

The Medicine Seller goes to jail for selling someone fake viagra and encounters Ochou who is set to hang for murdering her abusive husband and shitty inlaws. But not all is as it seems, including who Ochou actually killed and what the nature of that 'death' even was.

Nue

The Medicine Seller heads to a mansion in Kyoto and plays parlour games with a bunch of ghosts who are stuck in an endless loop in vying for the hand of Lady Ruri and continuously reliving their gruesome deaths because a piece of wood wanted to feel special.

Bakeneko

Time takes a leap to the early Showa era and The Medicine Seller hops on a train with some very familiar faces. They wind up trapped in a car together, terrorized by the ghost of a news reporter who allegedly committed suicide. Each must come clean about their role, however indirect, in her death to escape this prison.

Mundane Overview
 |
The Medicine Seller doesn't really display any physical capabilities that you wouldn't see in a physically fit adult in their mid-late twenties. One can assume that, since he's flesh and blood, his physical vulnerabilities would be the same as a normal person's as well.

Never-fucking-mind, Nakamura's lore drops reveal that the Medicine Sellers are physically very strong; Ri's weilder just happens to be extremely subtle about it.

Senses
 |
The Medicine Seller's senses tend towards 'above average'. He has good eyesight and a formidable sense of smell. Those big ears aren't just for show either; he has very good hearing, relying on the chimes from his scales to follow a Mononoke's movements.

Physical
 |
The Medicine Seller is quite a bit sturdier than he looks. His fitness regimen seems to be 'wandering all over Japan with a 400lb wooden box strapped to his back' and is shown to be able lift heavy objects with little trouble, and knock over grown men who are quite a bit bigger than him. He can handily defend himself in a scuffle, though he prefers to disarm an opponent rather than actually injure them - and that's only if he doesn't have the option to de-escalate or just walk away, which exhibits an incredible level of control. In canon, he's never shown to kill any living person, though given his dismissive attitude to people's deaths, there is little doubt that if truly threatened he wouldn't lose much sleep over taking a life in self-defense if there is no other option available to him. 

He also can move very quickly and nimbly when the mood takes him, and he has very quick reflexes. He also has the advantage of age and experience on his side with none of the deteriorating effects.

Mental/Emotional
 |
The Medicine Seller is a pretty smart guy; not necessarily genius levels, but he's clever, cunning, and, once again, age and experience are on his side, allowing a certain degree of breadth to his knowledge that a normal person wouldn't be able to possess.

Pursuing the truths behind the Mononoke requires a certain capacity for understanding human psychology (though the Medicine Seller may not use those terms as they're fairly recent as of his latest canon point). His opponents aren't things that need to be outmatched so much as they need to be understood, and understanding is vital to his very core.

This extends to his normal interactions; he's very inquisitive (to the point of nosiness), and likes to prompt people to talk about themselves. He is very patient, and good at listening, presenting himself as a sort of neutral party - something he struggles to turn off on the day-to-day. 

He's also open-minded and adaptable. He has a very go-with-the-flow kind of attitude to most situations, save for the ones that deeply rankle him. It's no easy feat to get his hackles up, but even the Medicine Seller's calm demeanor and emotional stability aren't completely impenetrable.

Nomadic Lifestyle

The Medicine Seller is a wandering vagrant. His home is the open road and whatever weird shortcuts he takes. While there is the Juuyoku (ten wings) located within the Shuuga no Mine (summit of gathered selves) where the Medicine Sellers dwell when off duty (yes, there's more of them), I like to think the wielder of the Ri sword spends a lot of his free time out in the world actually selling medicine while he decompresses from the latest Horrors. He's so aloof, I just don't see him as the sort to mingle in a supernatural office setting.

The Medicine Seller actually does seem to have some knowledge of medicine, as he's repeatedly shown to sell goods (either of his own making or traded), crafts both a magical gunpowder mixture and strange incense, and offers to mix a tonic for Moria-san in the second Bakeneko arc.

Overview
 |
The Medicine Seller's supernatural abilities are an ecclectic hodgepodge derived from Mikkyo Bhuddism (Sammitsu - a portmanteau of San Himitsu or 'Three Secrets'), Onmyudo, Taoism, and general Japanese folklore and tradition.



Formidable as his spiritual/magical abilities may be, they aren't infinite, especially with the sword sheathed. He can grow fatigued and often has to rely on external tools. 

Longevity
 |
If there is one thing we know for certain about the Medicine Seller, it's that he is old. The series spans around approximately the early - mid Edo period (it's hard to say exactly, given the anachronisms) all the way to the early Showa period (basically the 17th/18th centuries all the way to the early 20th) and he hasn't so much as aged a day (let alone got a change in wardrobe).

We don't know how old he is at the start of the series, but he's at least a few centuries on by the end and likely much, much older.

Shoiko | Medicine Box

Once you get past the weird eye motif ornamentation, it looks like any other medicine box. Given the sheer amount of stuff he's able to unpack from it, along with the tiny army of scales it houses, there is likely more to it than one might initially imagine.

Sword of Exorcisms

Resembling a Taoist peach tree sword, albeit gaudy and bedazzled with a Shiisa's head for a pommel, this sword contains is the key to awakening the Medicine Seller's Other Self, and being able to wield his power in full force. The sword itself seems to possess some awareness, occasionally speaking or rattling near the presence of a Mononoke, though that is likely the spirit of the Shingi it contains.

Tenbin |  Scales

Small, white scales, trimmed with pink and gold, resembling small white birds on the wing with jeweled red eyes. They measure the distance and direction of a Mononoke. Usually they are quite helpful, though (as seen in as the Zashiki Warashi was finally manifesting, they can be a little slow on the uptake sometimes).
 
Like the sword, they show a kind of awareness; they bow to and flock to people they like or are curious about, and once one gets over the unsettlingly high numbers of them, they can be quite cute. Likely some kind of tsukomogami.

Ofuda | Talismans

He can create powerful talismans that are effective in warding off supernatural nasties. They have four stages depending on proximity of said nasty; blank, black writing, black writing with a closed eye motif, red writing with an open eye motif, and when the sword is unsheathed, the paper turns gold, giving them a little extra oomph. He can also create wards without the ofuda but this is shown to be very draining and even capable of outright hurting him when the bakeneko pushes back against the ward, causing deep lacerations to appear on his hand.

Mirror

A circular hand mirror the Medicine Seller wears around his neck like a pendant. It can reveal the true reflection of things and in both the Umi Bozu and Noppera Bo arcs, it's shown to grow quite large and act as a shield or a means of reflecting hostile elements back.

Lantern

He keeps paper lanterns in his box along with a supply of gunpowder and other useful doodads for crafting homemade supernatural flashbombs.

Kiseru

The smoke from this is heavily implied to be the cause of the illusion in the Noppera-bo arc. Also if you don't think he isn't 420 balzing it 24/7, you haven't been paying attention.

Masks

Noh already has a long history serving a dual purpose of theatre and rites of exorcism. Is it any wonder that the Medicine Seller, with his penchant for the dramatic, would incorporate shamanistic Noh into his arsenal of tools? These masks are used in conjunction with illusions carefully crafted to draw one in to a play of sorts, and the Medicine Seller has mastered the use of artifice as a means of revealing truth.

The Medicine Seller has a very traditional view of sex; that is to say, traditional for someone in Japan pre-restoration. Which means he tends to view it as any other function; a perfectly healthy and normal thing to wish to partake in for those amenable to it. He'll speak about it with the frankness he would the weather, and there is very little that shocks him, especially these days. He tends to prefer more casual encounters; his lifestyle and work tend to not accomodate more traditional relationships, but he isn't devoid of affection for his partners either.

He's added a bit of Thedosian jewelry to the Look he already has had going for 9-10+ centuries. He's not about to change now just because people he doesn't know think it's 'odd'.

His first appearance was in the Bakeneko arc of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, an anthology of horror stories.
He later got his own spinoff series Mononoke

Personality:
The enigmatic Medicine Seller is not a particularly nice person. He’s certainly polite and observes all the niceties befitting his social superiors (which is literally everyone, yay feudalism), but there is little warmth in his interactions and he can come across as insincere or even mocking. His outward personality is soft spoken, cold, and quite formal. He keeps his composure, even in the midsts of pure chaos. When confronted with his deepest fear of a world with no Form, Truth, or Regret, and thus, an absence of purpose, he faces it calmly and accepts his end. Very little surprises him, though it's not entirely impossible to ruffle him either - usually acts of callousness or cruelty will do the trick. The thin veneer of observing etiquette and the strict social hierarchy breaks down instantly when shit hits the fan, and while he's still technically polite, the Medicine Seller is much more brusque and assertive.

He is singularly focused on his duty to sever the Mononoke from this world and while he makes an effort to protect those on the receiving end of their wrath (often by giving them ample opportunity to come clean with the information he needs), he’s stated that he has no obligation to save the people involved. Indeed, he rarely shows remorse when people die, but on the other hand they’ve been, almost without exception, irredeemable assholes. And hey, it’s not like he didn’t try.

He’s not completely devoid of compassion, however - he is shown to sympathize with regards to the suffering that made the Mononoke what they are. It is important to note that for the sword to be drawn, it requires that the Medicine Seller first empathize with the Mononoke on at least some level by understanding their motives. Tamaki and Ochou's plights struck a particular chord with the Medicine Seller.

He does have a moral compass, even if the needle may point a bit on the grey side. He believes in a person’s right to make their own choices, tempered with a measure of personal responsibility and that no one has the right to control another. He shows affection towards people who are assertive and compassionate and abhors abusers and people who force their will on others - his distaste for some of the other murderers in the series makes that much evident.

Despite his aloof demeanor, the Medicine Seller does have of a sense of humour - though it is rather dry and sarcastic. He takes delight in teasing those who are easily riled (such as Odajima and the detective), or sharing gossip. Sometimes this playfulness serves a purpose, either as a form of gathering information, or in one instance, to draw out a Mononoke. Other times it is merely for the Medicine Seller’s own amusement.

He also seems to have a particular affinity for cats.

Appearance: Let's just start with the fact that the Medicine Seller doesn't exactly fade into the background. While individual oddities don't really stick out until one takes in the whole big trippy picture, there are a number of distinguishing features. First and foremost, he is very pretty. Pretty enough to get quite a few women (of any age) flushed and stammering. His attire can only be described as eclectic.

....Actually, it could also apply the terms 'gaudy', 'ostentatious', and 'peculiar' to the mix, but let's go with 'eclectic' for now.

His light blue robe seems to be some kind of mix of a kimono and what a monk might wear, with eye-like patterns of purples, greens, and reds, evocative of those one would see on certain types of moths. It's tied with an elaborate brocade obi which trails almost to his feet. He's not particularly tall, but the two-toothed geta add a few inches to his height.

He carries a well made and sturdy (and very clearly heavy) medicine box on his back, with the motif of an eye on it. The eye motif is repeated constantly in both his clothes and possessions.

The Medicine Seller's skin is unnaturally pale - one could easily mistake it for make up, especially given the red markings on his nose, and around his eyes. His ears are pointed and the tips extend to the top of his head, and he has a pair of fangs that seem to become more prominent in times of crisis.

Abilities:
The Magical:

↠ Spiritually powerful. The Medicine Seller’s style of exorcism seems to be derived from Mikkyo Buddhism’s Sammitsu (a portmanteau of San Himitsu, or Three Secrets). There are also more than a few nods to Taoism and Shinto methods.
Even without the sword of exorcism (and, by proxy, the power of his other self), the Medicine Seller is still capable of creating powerful barriers and holding off Mononoke (though not indefinitely and, if they’re particularly strong, not coming out of it unscathed). His specific abilities shown in the series are such:

↠ Creating powerful barriers with his ofuda (paper charms where the writing changes form and colour depending on the proximity of the Mononoke) and protecting people they’re attached to from possession. He is also able to ward off spirits without the aid of the ofuda, but it was shown to be physically detrimental (lacerations appeared all over his hand and started bleeding heavily) and he grew fatigued very quickly.

↠ Being able to manipulate objects without touching them. The general rule of thumb here is that these objects seem to have to be linked to him somehow such as the ofuda, mirror, scales, his medicine pack, or sword. When he’s moving other objects such as doors or the handle of the Utsurobune, he’s attached his ofuda to them beforehand.

↠The Umibozu arc implies that the Medicine Seller can sense or outright see Ayakashi that others cannot.

↠ The Mirror. The little hand mirror the Medicine Seller wears around his neck can grow to the height of a man and acts as a shield from magical attacks. He also uses it to reveal Ochou’s Form.

↠ The Noppera Bo arc can be read as an elaborate illusion that the Medicine Seller created to draw out Ochou’s truth, form and regret. This is pretty ambiguous because it’s hard to say if he was exerting some kind illusion or if it was the Noppera Bo (implied to be his Other Self) doing it or a combined effort on both their parts or if it was mostly symbolism filtered through Ochou’s warped perception or a mix of all of the above. My own interpretation is that he did craft some manner of illusion, though it was fueled by Ochou’s own desire to escape her terrible situation.

↠ The Sword of Exorcism / The Other Self. When the Medicine Seller acquires a Mononoke’s Truth, Form, and Regret, he is able to unsheathe the sword of exorcism. The Medicine Seller seems to transform into (or be replaced by) another individual that wields the blade.
Nothing is known about the Other Self beyond the fact he is linked to the unsheathing of the blade. Whether the Other Self is the sword, a form or facet of the Medicine Seller, or a separate being entirely is never explained. What is evident is that the Other Self can absolutely decimate Mononoke, having superhuman strength and speed, and seemingly able to defy gravity. This is likely the reason why such specific conditions need to be met before the sword can be released.
The blade, when unsheathed, appears to be made of pure energy rather than metal. It extends, distorts, and bends as necessary, sometimes even acting on its own. Kayo asks in one episode if the sword is alive though the Medicine Seller's only response to this is a vague "I wonder". So so helpful.
For the sake of RP, I generally headcanon the Other Self as a facet of the Medicine Seller, rather than an entirely separate entity, that’s held in check via the sword and the need for the Mononokes’ Form, Truth, and Regret.

↠Long life. The Medicine Seller is not human. By the end of the series, he’s been around for at least two - three hundred years, and probably quite a bit longer even than that.

The Mundane:

↠ The bulk of his abilities is shown in his spiritual power, but he’s no slouch physically either. He’s got a quick enough reaction time to stop a body guard charging him, strength enough to force a man to re-sheathe his sword mid draw, kick a grown man over, and he generally moves pretty nimbly. None of his physical acts seem supernaturally powered, however. His strength is that of a physically fit man, and his dexterity comes from simple experience. A blade will cut him, and barring his long life span, he’s otherwise vulnerable to physical threats.

↠ Despite the fact that being a medicine seller is more or less a ruse so he can get to where he wants to go without seeming to be a threat, he still seems to know how to do his job. He carries a variety of exotic imports, is shown mixing the ingredients for what was essentially a magical flash grenade, is adept at mixing incense, and offers to mix up a tonic for the newspaper man in the last arc.

↠ Sharp senses. In the first Bakeneko arc, he is shown to have excellent hearing, being able to track the Mononoke’s path by the sound of the scales tipping from a room away. In the Nue arc, he is shown to have a formidable sense of smell, having concocted a strange incense of agar for the competition with only subtle differences between each blend.

↠ Intelligent. The Medicine Seller retains a wealth of knowledge with regards to medicine, supernatural beings (Ayakashi and Mononoke in particular) and many years of experience. He's also good at analyzing a situation and he knows when to ask those rather pointed questions and when to shut up and let people's bickering give him the information he needs.

↠ Pretty. Let's be real, if it weren't for his good looks, he'd probably get the boot more often than not because his personality sure leaves a lot to be desired.

Suitability:
While the Medicine Seller doesn't get too deeply involved with politics, he does tend to offer useful insight to others. He also has a knack for picking at the dark underbelly of things, and bringing various truths to light. Even if there aren't Mononoke to slay, having a skilled exorcist around could certainly come in handy.

Inventory:
↠ Clothes: Gaudy and bright and incorporating some very feminine elements including a brocade obi and an inordinate amount of jewelry (such as a necklace of what appears to be magatama made from red jade and in the last arc he’s got a pair of earrings and a fancy new ring). He wears brightly coloured blue robes would look out of place on any humble medicine seller, though he states that the reason he dresses the way he does is that people expect a peddler of exotic remedies to look… well, exotic.

The Medicine Seller can wield a great number of them - he also attaches them to objects to be able to move them without touching them.

↠ Medicine Pack: A lovely though otherwise seemingly typical pack for a medicine seller. It’s definitely bigger on the inside, given that it houses an inordinate amount of paraphernalia that couldn’t fit otherwise.

It contains:

↠ Misc Meds and Paraphernalia: Kept in the bottom drawer. There are many varieties including medicine imported from China and India (including a small store of opium and Indian hemp), what amounts to essentially herbal viagra, gunpowder, oleander, ingredients for incense, kizami (a type of tobacco) and a kiseru, paper lanterns, various mixing bowls and other tools, and a bunch of statues, incense holders, 'marital aids', little charms, and whatever other miscellaneous crap the Medicine Seller might have taken a fancy to. Including what appears to be an octopus. I hope it’s a just statue and not some hapless creature the Medicine Seller decided to pluck out of the ocean.

↠ Scales: A legion of tiny, bird shaped scales kept in the middle drawer. They measure distance, not weight and when a Mononoke is close, they drop bells from their trays and lean in the direction of the Mononoke. They seem to be somewhat sentient, as they are controlled with only small gestures, and the Medicine Seller even remarks they’ve taken a liking to Kayo. When confused, they fall over, much to the Medicine Seller’s chagrin.

Game Origin: Fade Rift -or- Dragon Age Inquisition: The DW Game. Essentially it's a panfandom game that takes place in the Dragon Age world during the events of the latest installment - Inquisition. A big hole opened in the sky, demons and Rifters (what canon characters from other worlds are called) poured out, and this guy with like, poprocks growing out of his face is kind of making things terrible for everyone because he wants to bring back the glory of an old empire. Also Rifters get weird green shards in their hands that allow them to close rifts. I would be perfectly happy with that vanishing somewhere between Thedas and Konryu though since it would be utterly useless in Khu.

CRAU Changes: Personality-wise the Medicine Seller hasn't changed on some profound, fundamental levels, and beyond the fade shard lodged in his hand, hasn't really undergone any physiological ones. For about a year now, he's been in situations that have forced him out of his solitary comfort zone and had to work with others. He's also lived in close proximity with the same people in the same place - an unusual change of pace, given his wanderlust. The Fade Shard made it so he couldn't just fuck off into the blue without dealing with extreme pain, so he's grown to tolerate others and has opened himself up a bit to interpersonal relationships. He's a little more comfortable with the whole teamwork thing, and some of his sharper edges have softened a little. He's still fairly cold and cynical and generally expects the worst of any new encounters, but he's a tad better at giving people the benefit of the doubt.

Status---A Rifter who arrived back in Wintersmarch. A colourful and rather eccentric merchant of medicines, incense and ~~marital aids~~ miscellaneous memorabilia who tends to hang about selling his wares.

Displays considerable aptitude with wards that are highly effective against spiritual entities.

Reputation---An eccentric individual with a creepy cadence - however - his remedies have a reputation for being effective and his prices fair. His pointed ears, facial markings, and unusual style of dress has left the more ignorant under the impression he's just Dalish and not a Rifter. Given that the Dalish have a marginally better reputation among the general public than people assumed to be demons, he hasn't bothered to correct these mistakes when they crop up.

He has a habit of asking quite a lot of questions, particularly about matters related to spirits, demons and abominations. He's also been rather persistent in asking about Darkspawn, Grey Wardens and all the trappings thereof.

As of the move to Kirkwall, he's shown to be more than a simple merchant with a morbid fascination. The Medicine Seller has displayed some magical capabilities, though they seem limited to casting powerful wards with strange paper talismans.

On the flip side of things, Mononoke is a horror series that deals with some heavy subject matter including (but not limited to) kidnapping, rape, murder, prostitution, forced abortion, incest, domestic abuse, misogyny and other nasty things.

While the series actually deals with these things with something resembling restraint, they are still prominent themes within the show. While it would be unlikely for the Medicine Seller to vocally reference these events, he may do so in his internal monologue. If anything here is a major "no" for you, feel free to either message me privately or leave a comment here so it doesn't come up (or just opt out altogether!).
