Was no masterpiece by the medicine seller, but it was far better than the shit Pearson made them eat. Through trial and error he'd gotten better at cooking the last month or so. Mostly because eating everything raw as a bear got boring.
He dipped a piece of bread in the juices and began to eat in earnest. "Can hardly wait for the lake to thaw, would love to get some fish again." he sighed, pouring himself some of the drink into a chipped mug. "Can't get drunk no more. Most injuries heal over in seconds..."
Arthur looked at the other man, slowing his eating to really look at him. "Guess you found me again after all," he said with a wry smile, recalling when he spoke of appearing in another life some years later maybe.
The Medicine Seller certainly seemed to be enjoying the meal, spooning meat and vegetables and sipping broth from the bowl. He was about to mention the fish he caught when Arthur pointed out his own words to him.
He smiled; a small one, but the sharp and chilly features softened, and there was a warmth behind his eyes.
"It would seem as though I have."
Much sooner than he expected, but glad of it all the same.
"A little fuzzier than I left you, but in much better health."
The Medicine Seller did not break eye contact; in part because he was simply happy to see the other man alive and well, but also to keep an eye on his expressions.
Arthur had been through so much, the world had taken so much out of him.
It seemed due to put a little back.
"If you are offering," he said slowly, "I would like that very much."
Arthur smiled again and relaxed, "You're welcome to stay...long as you want. Or until you get tired of me" he laughed a little.
Wouldn't take long, no one stuck with him long, but the company would be welcome after being on his own, apart from Buell anyway.
He returned to his stew. "What about you anyway? What you been up to while I was dead?" he asked "Anymore of them uhh Naeg...The thing that bit your leg." he said, giving up on trying to recall what the medicine seller had called the cannibal let alone pronounce it.
He was starting to pick up on the pattern of ways Arthur talked about himself. Self-deprecating but in a way that sounded all too sincere.
Instead of platitudes and reassurances that would go in one ear and out the other, the Medicine Seller decided to change tactics.
"Likewise, you are welcome to send me on my way when you tire of me," he replied in kind, wondering how that would sound in Arthur's ears.
"And no, no more Naegatsuku," he said with a small shake of his head. "Other things though. With one foot in this corner of the world, you may begin to recognize such things more often."
Arthur's ability to heal certainly had him wondering if he would have similar longevity to the Medicine Seller - though he mustn't get his hopes up. He wasn't even sure of the moral implications of hoping such a thing.
Arthur nodded, but didn't really listen. He'd never tire of his company. Folk always tired of him.
The statement that he'd notice more...supernatural things, was interesting. "Really? Like what?" he asked, getting up and refilling his bowl and sitting with him again, scooting his chair a bit closer.
He could smell the other man from across the table...How strange...his eyes drifted to his neck and along his ears...
Christ just finish dinner first you horny bastard.
He did not miss the look, not if that pleased little smirk were aught to go by.
The Medicine Seller was certainly not shy with his attraction. Perhaps subtle when he was feeling in a particularly infuriating mood, but fortunately for Arthur, he didn't feel like teasing the man into a frenzy.
There was the lightest brush of his foot against Arthur's; something that could easily be construed as an accident when Arthur shifted closer. However, when the Medicine Seller dragged his foot up the inside of his calf, that could be seen as very deliberate.
"Restless spirits, people warped beyond their humanity by profound regret, whatever it was the Murfrees had been trying to awaken."
He finished off his own bowl; he didn't quite have the same appetite as Arthur, but he wondered if their other appetites may be much closer in alignment.
"Aside from the healing, appetite, and turning into a half-ton carnivore, have you noticed any other changes to your physicality?"
Arthur shifted in his seat, trying to focus on his food, but the statement about the Murfrees distracted him entirely. "What do you mean what they were tryin' to awaken?" he asked, brow furrowing.
"Don't tell me they're tryin' to summon somethin'?" he asked, the idea of it absurd. For various reasons. Less about the supernatural, more that the Murfrees knew how to do anything but piss themselves.
"I do not know and do not hope to ever find out. You clearing them out seemed to put a stop to whatever was going on."
He nibbled on the rest of his bread, warm and content from Arthur's presence and a rather tasty stew. Heavier than his usual fare, but in this weather, it was very much welcome.
"When I went to deal with an Onryo, I felt another older presence. Lessening the amount of people turned into twisted effigies seems to have stopped it stirring, however."
Arthur listened attentively, frown deepening at the idea of the Murfrees possibly trying to summon or please something...
"We saved a girl." he blurted suddenly "The day we went and cleared them out of Beaver Hollow, there was body parts and weird effigies. We burned and rid of all that but, they'd taken a girl, and she was still alive down there. We got her out, got her home. Any idea if that might have anythin' to do with what they was maybe doing?"
He'd ask what an Onryo was another time. But had he and Charles actually stopped something?
Arthur looked at him. He didn't want to know? Maybe it was too horrible. He'd seen some damned disgusting things in that cave, the girl had been in literal hell. But if the medicine seller, a man with potentially centuries on him in terms of this shit was okay with leaving it lie, maybe that was for the best.
He worked on his second bowl of stew, finishing also what the other man didn't want and setting the rest of the bread aside as it'd keep for a couple more days.
When all was cleaned up, he took his friend outside to meet Buell. He was bigger than Edelweiss with blue eyes and more grumpy than his mare had been, but Arthur gave him treats and treated him well as any horse he'd had.
"Tonight's a full moon. Learned I can't stop the change when the sun goes down" he said, adjusting the stallion's blanket.
He followed Arthur, toeing on his shoes and getting a small satchel of dried fruit and walnuts from his box to give to Buell.
He couldn't help the shiver when stepping out into the bitter chill from the nice cozy cabin with his belly full of hot stew and bread, and he kept close to the other man as his body readjusted.
Buell was a fine old horse, he thought. The kind that had seen it all and didn't impress or spook easily, so he closed his fist around some treats, and held it out so Buell could get his scent as well as that of the fruit and nuts, before he turned his hand over, palm up, so the horse could eat.
"I carry painkillers," he said, patting Buell's muzzle when he'd finished. "If you wish to take the edge off of the transformations. Some take to the changes better than others, but they are never painless."
Buell snorted, giving the man's hand a whiff and taking the offered treats.
Arthur checked the water to make sure it hadn't frozen over before stroking the beast's neck. He looked to the medicine seller and shook his head, "The transformation is quick. Leaves me a bit tired but the pain goes away fast once its done." he said. Confident his stallion was all set for the night, they returned to the warm and cozy interior of the cabin.
He pulled him close once they were inside, burying his face against the nape of his neck, breathing in his heat and scent. He was quite certain that morning would be the last he'd see of the man. To have him here, for as long as he wanted...it was surreal to think about like much of the last few months.
"You coming with me tonight or stayin' here?" he asked him quietly.
He was pleased to hear it and was about to say as much when once again he was in Arthur's arms. Circling his own around him, he pressed a kiss into his hair, stroking a soothing circles over his back.
"As though I would be parted from you so soon," he huffed in a whisper against Arthur's ear.
"Besides, I think you will make a very fine bear indeed."
The caresses along his back had him relax, he could hardly believe the man was here with him. Even if he'd not been sick before and he'd survived all that hell and he wasn't...whatever he was, Arthur was still glad he'd come back to him.
"Will I now?" he chuckled, kissing his neck and sighing against the soft skin, "What makes you say that darlin'?"
The kiss felt nice, the Medicine Seller arching up into it with a soft, pleased sigh, his cheek pressed into the crown of Arthur's head as he bears his throat for him.
"Though they are strong and fierce," he said, sliding around one pale hand to pluck at the top buttons of his longjohns. They looked ever so toasty and he wouldn't mind slipping his hands in to warm them.
"They are also intelligent and protective of what they love."
Arthur sighed with a groan, kissing his pulse point as he felt his fingers slip in his top, the light scratch of his nails pulling another rumble from him.
"Think you're overestimating me" he chuckled, moving to his lips to kiss him. "But how I want yea..."
However, the winter sun set quickly and it'd be dark in less than half an hour.
"Need head out...before I change and get stuck inside" he grinned. He was too big to fit through the door as during the snowstorm last moon he'd hunkered down in the cabin.
He pushes up into the kiss, needing to stand on his toes without his geta to give him those much needed three inches to his not-so-considerable height.
"There will be plenty of time for such things," he remarked, reluctantly pulling his hands free (though not without a cheeky tweak of a nipple when he mentions 'such things').
"For now let us head out. The area is beautiful, and I would not mind a little nightly tour."
Arthur flinched and gave a small moan at the tease, resolving tomorrow they'd have their fun with one another.
He pressed another kiss against the other's lips and nodded in agreement, reluctantly pulling away and undressing, finding it easier to just turn before the darkness forced it. He set his union suit on the bed and stepped outside into the cold, bare feet crunching in the snow, swearing up a storm as he got off the porch and a little ways from the house and into the tree line.
Buell did not appreciate him changing nearby as he'd learned the first time he'd done so here.
He didn't wait for the medicine seller, instead, reached into that part of himself he knew well by now, and changed. It was painful as ever as his body's entire being shifted within and he tore his own skin off, revealing powerful muscle and fur beneath, the skin itself vanishing into nothing until a massive bear stood where Arthur had a moment prior.
His fur was the same color as the man's hair and he still retained the facial scars-along with a few others mostly hidden in the fuzz-and his bright blue eyes. He shook himself with a grunt and got his bearings looking around for his companion.
He watched the transformation, watched Arthur's pained expression and the gruesome in between display of rending flesh and snapping bone.
He'd offer the painkillers again another time. For now, he finished stripping his many layers and shook out his mane of hair - even thicker in the winter- and then focused.
It had been a while, but for him there was no pain. More like a really good stretch where your vision briefly whites out.
A pale fox trotted up beside Arthur - unmistakably the Medicine Seller as it sported the same red markings on his face and eyes. He was small as foxes went, probably the runt of the litter, and his fur was the same ashen blond as his hair, lightening around his belly and muzzle. He was also a bit scruffy, as there were still patches where his winter coat had yet to come in.
His tail, however was enormous. Or rather, it seemed to fork into eight tails and they twitched excitedly as he caught sight of Arthur's distinctive eyes.
Arthur watched his companion change into his form, amused that he'd guessed right that he was a fox all along back when they first met and he told him the story.
He was absolutely adorably tiny compared to himself and sported a lot more tails than he'd ever seen on any creature.
He chuffed and nosed him-his whole head could easily fit in his mouth-his scent now familiar to him, and he gave one ear a lick before lumbering deeper into the woods as the sun dipped low on the horizon. The cold no longer an issue with his fur coat, though as it was very unusual for a bear to be out of hibernation, he had to keep an eye out for people. Not that there were many up here but just in case.

Well now, that just wasn't fair. He couldn't even reach Arthur's fuzzy little bear ears from here.
For a fox, the Medicine Seller acted a lot more like a cat, winding his way around Arthur's legs as he walked. If there were any people about, the two of them would certainly cut a strange sight; but the Medicine Seller could only smell other creatures out here.
Mostly squirrels, chipmunks, and hares.
Regardless, he stayed close to Arthur, simply enjoying the other's company out here where they didn't have to worry about society closing in around them.
It was a strange new life he'd found. Before, everything from money to his very life was to the gang, and had been since he was fourteen. Now, it was only him.
Every cent he earned from the trapper, every meal he cooked or gathered ingredients for was for his own meals only, anything he looted off the bodies of Murfrees or other scumbags who came through here was his, and his alone.
With the medicine seller now, things had changed again. Arthur had companionship again, but not someone who demanded or depended on him for every little thing. He had an equal. An equal who'd shown him compassion, and passion alike he might add.
Much as he missed John and the rest, this new world he was carving out for himself, with the medicine seller beside him for as long as he liked, was something he'd never thought he'd get. A second chance.
The odd pair walked beside-and around-one another, enjoying the quiet winter evening, snow and frozen leaf litter crunching beneath his massive paws.
